McCall Elementary & Middle School

Dear McCall Family,

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the McCall Faculty and Staff Appreciation Breakfast yesterday. As the school year comes to a close, I am reminded of this quote by Arthur Ashe, “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” At McCall, we do what we can so that our faculty, staff, and students have what they need to succeed. Look no further than these highlights from what we accomplished together: 100 Book Challenge; McCall Gala; Blue and Gold Day; Spring Carnival; Annie, Jr.; McCall Relays; Scholastic Book Fair; Spring Cleanup; Election Day Bake Sale s; Warm Fuzzies Winter Accessories Drive, and the Halloween Party. Thank you to Elle for quietly managing our school’s lost and found, donating unclaimed items to a local charity. Thank you to McCall Spirit (formerly Uniforms) Chair Mizuki Harris, Nancy Lin, and volunteers for your herculean efforts! Everything we do at McCall is truly a team effort and it’s what makes our community so vibrant.

We’re ending the school year on a high note:
– Let’s send every good wish to McCall Class of 2019!
– Last week, McCall’s Scott Knoflicek and Green Team won a CLEANfutures Award! (The Green team is in need of volunteers to help water, harvest, and weed the school garden over the summer. Please sign up to help!)
– Congratulations to Stanley Gao, 2019 Triple A Outstanding School Safety Patroller!
– We’re proud of Ms. Merlini, who won the prestigious Lindback Award!
– Kudos to McCall students on winning WHYY Media Lab awards!
– Congratulations to the new members of the School Advisory Council! The HSA looks forward to working with the new members. (More info to come!) Thank you to Paige Wolf and Frank Schaffer for your past service on the McCall.

Congratulations to Mr. Brown, Ms. Sei, and Ms. Zondek on winning the Box Tops Contest! They and their students will enjoy ice cream from an ice cream truck today. We appreciate families, faculty, and staff for participating in this year’s contest. Thank you to parent volunteer Aimee Schaar for chairing McCall Box Tops!

The HSA is here to serve as a vital bridge between home and school. Per the Coffee with the Principal, to ensure the safety of faculty, staff, and students, the District has initiated a paint stabilization project. McCall is one of the the high-priority schools. Here is an update on a report by environmental assessors. Thank you to Councilmember Squilla, Philadelphia Healthy Schools Coalition, Principal McKenna, and the School District of Philadelphia for this information.

Thank you for all you do! McCall HSA treasurer Cari Akula is preparing a financial update for the McCall community. Due to the volume of financial activity between April and now, please expect a detailed report in 2-3 weeks.
